Best Of The Web PERFORMANCE HACKS

Best of the web performance

As some of our dancers are busy attending competitions and community performances, others are gearing up for recital. Where ever your dancer is in their performance season, it is never too early to start planning for a smooth, stress-free event. From quick changes to event safety, we have collected the best dance performance hacks from the web so you can breathe easy. At Prestige, our best advice is to plan ahead and go through the big day with your dancer so they know what to expect and you are both on the same page. Who is helping them change? When and where can they eat? When can they relax for a bit? Dancers generally will feel more prepared and less frazzled when there is a plan in place and as a dance parent, you will feel better too!

  • Labeling Garment Bags For Dance Competitions and Recitals – This article tells you exactly how to label and organize your costumes. Quick changes will be a breeze and lost costumes will be a thing of the past if you follow this method.

  • Dance Bag Organization – We think using a reusable wine/beverage bag from a grocery store does an AMAZING job at creating little compartments within your dance bag. The dancer in the article uses the bag alone but it would fit inside of your normal bag too. You could even use more than one! It would make finding shoes and accessories SO much easier!

  • How to Clean Practically Anything Dance Related – Dirty shoes, dancewear, or costumes, this article has got you covered!

  • A Snack Plan– This is an easy idea to keep all your dancer’s snacks organized. We all know it takes a lot of fuel perform at your best so make sure your dancer is well stocked with healthy options!

  • Event Safety – We love this article and video on how to keep your dancers safe during performances. Although we do our best to make sure every event runs as smoothly and safely as possible, sometimes things happen. Having a first aid kit on hand as a simple way to ease your mind during a very busy day.

We love seeing our Prestige dancers perform on stage! With these simple hacks, you will be able to relax and enjoy the show!

Dress Down To Support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Dress Down For Dance

Have you decided to join in for Dress Down for Dance?? We could not be more excited about this fun week of classes happening at our studio from February 20th-26th. As you all know, our teachers can be pretty strict about our dress code hehe. During this week of normal dance classes, we give students the opportunity to FINALLY wear what they want to wear! It can feel amazing to express your inner self through dance clothes. And to make it even MORE fulfilling, all the proceeds are going to an incredible organization, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Paying $5 the night of your regularly scheduled dance classes will allow your dancer to participate in the dress down for one whole night of dance. The best part? It will help support the LLS.

In case you need any more convincing to get in on the fun, let me tell you a little about the LLS and the important work they do. Their main focus is to find cures for blood cancers. They also provide patients the information, support, and tools necessary to access treatment and care. The LLS is one of the leading organizations for blood cancer research putting in over $1 billion since it’s creation to this effort. They also provide free information, support groups, financial support, and much, much more for patients and families.

We are so honored to be sending the proceeds from our dress down to the LLS. We want to do our part in helping them continue to do the amazing things they do. Our family at Prestige always goes above and beyond with helping others. There are no words to express how inspiring it is to watch young students get behind the “giving back” message. I cannot wait to see all of the participants for Dress Down for Dance and of course the outfit choices!

Who’s Excited for Our Annual Recital?

dance recital

Our annual dance recital will be here before we know it! Below we have included the important dates leading up to the performance. Please review the dates and let us know if you have any questions. Look out for the recital packet at the studio in March. Recital time is a busy time… but all the hard work is worth it! Promise! Students get so much out of performing. Beyond the flowers and applause, there are many lessons that come from taking the stage including:

Cooperation-  Dancers starting as young as three learn how to work alongside their classmates to put together something they are proud of. Making lines, changing formations, working with a partner… all lessons in how to work with others!

Confidence- It takes a lot of guts to step on stage in front of an audience! Dancers that perform gain poise and confidence that translates to whatever they take on. They get an opportunity to push beyond their comfort zone and know that they can do it. Bring on that school presentation or speech!

Attention to Detail- Are the shoes the right color? Do you have lipstick on? Are you on your spot? Dancers quickly learn that these things really do matter when it comes to putting on a fabulous production. Another lesson that translates outside of dance.

Resiliency– Live performance doesn’t ALWAYS go perfectly. Mistakes happen. Dancers quickly learn they have to be able to think on their feet and make quick adjustments. In a performance, a dancer doesn’t get a lot of time to wallow.. the show must go on! Drop a prop? Quickly pick it up. Fall? Quickly get up. Performers get MANY opportunities to practice quickly recovering from a setback.

New Stretch & Strength Class at Prestige Dance Studio

New Class at Prestige Dance Studio

Lets’ talk about cross-training for dancers! We are super excited to be offering a Stretch & Strength class to our dancers Monday evenings with Miss Alyssa at Prestige Dance Studio this Fall. Anyone curious? Interested in giving it a try but unsure if it will make a difference in your technique? Spoiler alert.. it will 🙂 Today we are going to break down what exactly cross-training is, why it is important, and also give you a few ideas for working in some conditioning at home.

Cross-training is training outside of your main activity that improves overall fitness. So for dancers, it would be swimming, pilates, yoga, running, lifting weights, or any activity that is NOT dancing. The goal is finding ways to build strength and increase flexibility in muscles that are not always targeted in a dance class. Dance classes tend to target the same muscles over and over again- which puts dancers at risk for overuse injuries and muscular imbalances. Training outside of dance can help to correct those imbalances and help dancers continue to make strides in their technique working their bodies in a new way. Listen to an expert weigh in!

Most dancers would agree that the way to get better at a certain skill is to repeat that skill a million times. While this is true; cross training can help dancers reach their goals faster and reduce dancers risk for an injury. Lets’ break down a grand jete (a leap). A dancer can practice her leaps every week faithfully but if she has weak glutes or is lacking the dynamic flexibility she needs for a perfect “split”, it’s going to be awhile before she starts to see any improvements. Now lets’ pretend that this dancer starts attending Stretch & Strength class with Miss Alyssa. She starts doing lunges and squats to work on her lower body strength. She also works on some squat jumps so she can practice engaging her glutes when she jumps. They do leg swings and spend additional time stretching. Not to mention the additional abdominal work! Any guesses as to how her leaps are going to look after a few months? My bet is that she is going to see big improvements.

Cross-training should be a part of your routine. Think about what you need as a dancer. What feedback do you get from your teachers? Do you need more flexibility, more strength, or more stamina? Pick an activity outside of dance that can support your goals. Cross-training can help you to make huge strides in your technique, avoid injury, and be a great stress reliever! Ready to get started? Miss Alyssa would love to see you in class. Contact the studio to set up your trial! Here are a few links to workouts that can be done at home. Happy cross-training dancers!
