Are You Ready for Recital 2021?!

dance recital in Cedar Rapids

The countdown is officially ON! Prestige Dance Studio’s 8th Annual Recital, “Our Favorite Show” is happening THIS Sunday, June 6th. Are you ready for a spectacular performance, an amazing showcase of artistry, and the most impressive dance recital in Cedar Rapids?!

Our students have worked SO hard this year. The recital stage is where it ALL comes together. Take it from us, teachers who’ve spent our lives both on stage performing and off stage watching from the wings, there’s nothing quite like hearing that applause!

Each year, we prepare our students for recital by perfecting their routines in class, hosting dress rehearsals, and teaching them exactly what to expect on the big day. With an in-studio dress rehearsal as well as one at the Paramount Theatre, we work out all the little kinks with costumes, hair, makeup, adrenaline, and everything in between!

So… is your child ready for Recital 2021?!

  • Have they sorted and organized their costumes in the order they appear in this show?
  • Are their accessories, tights, and dance shoes all accounted for in their recital bag?
  • Do they know what time they should be ready to leave the house?
  • Is your child performing their routines ALL around the house?
  • Have you caught them sneaking a peak at their costumes over and over?
  • Are they asking to listen to their recital songs on repeat?

*A Little Note*
For dancers over the age of 8, we recommend that they pack their own recital bags (with mom or dad’s approval at the end). This helps them take responsibility for their belongings and reduces backstage confusion because they know exactly where everything is. Dancers, this is YOUR job! Don’t make your beloved dance parents do all the hard work!

Now… we know our students are ready to dance… but are YOU ready for Recital 2021?!

  • Are you prepared to see your child in a whole new light? Literally, those stage lights really make our dancers shine!
  • Did you purchase your tickets yet? Email the studio office at prestigedancestudiocr@gmail.com for any inquiries.
  • Do you know what time to arrive with your dancer at the theater? Visit our recital page and enter the password to review the schedule.
  • Are you prepared to be in awe of your child’s dance moves? We guarantee they’ve grown by leaps and bounds.
  • Are you expecting to watch your child’s confidence soar when they step on stage? Seeing them come out of their shells is magical!
  • Do you have any ideas on which TV shows you’ll hear some tunes from? Our recital theme this year is “Our Favorite Show,” and we can’t wait for it to come together!
  • Did you clear your iPhone storage for tons of precious pictures? You AND your dancer will look back and treasure these moments forever!
  • Are you ready to laugh, grin, and cry your heart our during the Dude and Dancer performance? It’s one of our favorite recital traditions.
  • Most importantly, are you ready to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show? Our dance parents work SO hard for their kids. We hope the show is your chance to finally watch your child shine ALL by themselves while you watch in amazement!

We can’t wait to see you at the Paramount Theatre this Sunday! Tell us you’re going on Facebook! It is truly a gift to see our dance families come together to celebrate our student’s hard work.

If you have any questions about the upcoming weekend or need anything from our staff, please contact us via email at prestigedancestudiocr@gmail.com. We’d be happy to help!

Break a leg dancers!

3 Things We LOVE Showing Off at Our Parent Observation Week

Cedar Rapids Dance Studio

We’ve got an exciting week coming up at Prestige! The week of February 22nd is Parent Observation Week and we can’t wait to open the doors to our Cedar Rapids dance studio! Prestige parents are welcome during the last 10 minutes of their students’ class. Be sure to mark your calendars and RSVP to our Facebook event so you get those reminder notifications.

In the meantime, we’d love to share what this week is ALL about. We’ve got great students here at Prestige, and we can’t help but show them off! More importantly, it’s a moment in the middle of the year to do something for our Prestige parents, who do SO much for their kids and for our studio. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating your kids’ progress. We promise to impress!

3 Things We LOVE to Show Off at Our Parent Observation Week:

1. Our Latest and Greatest Skill Progressions

This time of year is usually when our students start to REALLY get it when it comes to difficult skills. Things are clicking in their brains and they are thrilled at the thought of adding them to their recital dances. We invite you to come check out all the stellar progress we’ve made on those leaps, turns, tricks, and more! We know they make us proud.

2. The Beginnings of Our Recital Dances!

Recital choreography is in full swing! Now is your chance to get a sneak peek of your child’s dances that we’re gearing up to perform in June. Sharing this with our parents really builds the excitement for the kiddos.

3. The Joy and Excitement That Hasn’t Faded Since Fall

Amazing dance moves are great, but we know that those priceless smiles top everything else. Our Parent Observation Week is our way of reminding you of how valuable your support for your child is, and how much joy we witness in class each week.

So, will we see you there?! During the last 10 minutes of every class, parents who feel comfortable are welcome to stop in and check out what we’ve been working on! If you are uncomfortable being in the classroom during that week, send us an email and we would be happy to help!

4 Takeaways as We Close Out Our 2019-20 Season

dance in Cedar Rapids

Wow, just WOW! This week we hosted our first ever at-home recital week and we were SO thrilled at the results. To watch this challenging year end on such a positive note was incredibly heart-warming. We couldn’t help but share the Prestige Pride we are feeling!

This season of dance in Cedar Rapids has been full of ups and downs. When we started preparing for time away from the studio, we had no idea what was ahead. As many of you may have experienced, there were bouts of positivity, bouts of not-so-great, and a whole lot of uncertainty! BUT, as we close out the season, a few things have been made SUPER clear! 🙂

Check out these 4 Takeaways as We Close Out Our 2019-2020 Season:

1. We Have the Best Dance Parents

The spotlight may have been on the kids this past week, but we know that NONE of this would have been possible without our incredible dance parents. Zoom classes? Forget about it. Costume pick-up? Nope. At-home recital? Our parents are rockstars!

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you Prestige Parents. Thank you for supporting your dancer through a tricky time. Thank you for your unwavering support of Prestige Dance Studio. It means the world, especially right now!

2. We Have the Most Dedicated Students

Even though we hopped on Zoom each day with smiling faces and pointed toes, we know that all these changes haven’t been easy on our students. Learning dance through a screen and staying energized without in-person connection is a difficult task. But our dancers didn’t let ANYTHING stop them!

3. The Show Must Always Go On

We’ve loved getting the chance to teach one of the most important life lessons to our students: how to be resilient during tough times. After years of telling our kids to keep dancing on stage even if a shoe falls off or the music stops, it gives us great pride to be able to practice what we preach in real-time!

We hope that our Prestige Families have been able to embrace this mantra as we all tackle this unpredictable new normal together. Yes, the kids have shown us how adaptable they can be. But our parents’ grit and determination as they’ve continued providing amazing opportunities for their families have completely blown us away!

4. Dance Brings People Together

When we reflect upon the last couple of months, sometimes it is just unbelievable to think about what our community has done to stay connected! We were forced to separate ourselves (literally and figuratively) and yet we still managed to come together to dance, learn, and perform.

For our instructors and staff, there was no question in our minds that we had to continue teaching and providing our kids with a creative outlet. For so many of our families, dance in Cedar Rapids was not something they’d give up easily. We can’t deny it, dance brings people together through thick and thin!

We hope that reading this list has made you feel a bit of the love we’ve been feeling as we close out our AMAZING year of dance in Cedar Rapids. We love our community and are so thankful for the families that call Prestige home.

Congrats to ALL our Prestige Dancers for an amazing season and a SPECTACULAR at-home recital week! Be sure to follow us on Facebook to view some adorable photos from our end-of-year virtual events!

Start 2020 Off Right: 5 Tips for Supporting Your Dancer

dance parents

Happy New Year Prestige dance parents! What is your dancer looking to accomplish this year? Are they hoping to move up a level in their technique classes? Do they want to audition for our competition team this year? Do they have big dreams of dancing professionally one day? However lofty their goals are, we are here to support them!

As dance parents, we KNOW that you see your child’s potential and want them to accomplish great things. The truth is, us dance teachers see their potential too, but sometimes kids need just a little extra push. Together, we want to make 2020 the biggest year of growth for our young dancers.

This month’s blog post is all about helping your dancer establish good habits that set themselves up for success. Follow these tips, and your dancers will feel more supported than ever while working towards their dance goals!

1. Mark Your Calendars

First and foremost, we encourage all of our dance families to stay on top of this year’s important dates. The busy, end of the year rush is approaching quickly so it’s important to get these events on your radar now!

When dress rehearsal or recital sneak up on you, it will probably show in your dancer’s performance. We never want our hard-working students to feel flustered and stressed on the big day. Being well-prepared in the coming months will make all the difference! View our full school year calendar on our website.

2. Make 2020 the Year of Arriving to Class Early and Ready To Go!

We tell our dancers to do this ALL the time! At the beginning of the year, everyone is usually on time and ready to go RIGHT when class starts! But as the year progresses, we tend to see promptness, dress code, and other studio policies fall to the wayside.

We can’t stress it enough: stretching before class is crucial for injury prevention and success in the studio. Especially during the cold months, jumping right into class without any time to warm up your body is bad for your muscles. Getting to the studio early will help your child enter class with a warm body and focused mind!

3. Encourage Your Dancer to Set Goals and Stay Accountable

Coming to class each week with a specific goal in mind really helps kids advance their skills. Sitting down with your child at home and creating a list of realistic dance goals is a GREAT way to establish focus in 2020. If dance is a foreign language for you ;), ask your child’s instructor for some feedback on what they should work on. We are always happy to help!

After these goals are set, the car ride to and from class each week is a great time to check-in. “What are you going to work on today in class?” and “How did your pirouettes go today?” are easy questions to ask! Offering encouragement on good days AND bad days will make them feel supported always.

4. Attend Parent Observation Week

Ask any dance teacher, and we will ALL tell you that kids dance bigger and better when there is an audience in the room. During Parent Observation Week, a spark usually lights up because our students are proud of all they have learned. Being there shows them that you are invested in their growth!

Additionally, Parent Observation Week is a great way to touch base with your child’s teachers and observe your child’s progress. Staying involved will make 2020 their best year yet! Learn more about this special week on our Facebook event!

5. Encouraging Your Child to Stretch and Practice At Home

Flexibility and remembering recital dances are things that come naturally to some, but not to most. If the only time that your child stretches or runs through their dances is class time, they will likely not be able to make significant strides.

Being an audience at home for a mock performance can really help your dancer ROCK their recital in 2020. In addition, encouraging your child to stretch each night after dinner while winding down with television will make their flexibility soar this year.

Hopefully this list sets ALL of our dance families up for an amazing year of dance in 2020! We tell our students to do these things throughout the year, but hearing it from you can really make a difference.

More importantly, you know your child best, so you know how to best get through to them. Between your support at home, and our support in class, we really believe that these kids can accomplish great things. Watch them shine in 2020 with us! It’s going to be a great year!

Take a Look at Our Picture-Perfect Performance Teams

performance dance teams

Hey Prestige families, with the holidays coming to a close, we are ALREADY thinking about 2020 over here. With the new decade just around the corner, we think we are most excited about seeing our Prestige Performance Dance Teams perform their BRAND NEW dances. January means competition and performance season is officially in full swing!

So today on the blog, we are ringing in the new year by sharing a little more about these hard-working and dedicated teams. They are going to ROCK their performances in 2020. Be sure to scroll down for links to our fabulous team photo galleries, where you can see each young dancer in action.

P.Co

P.Co is Prestige Dance Studio’s all-genre competition team. The P.Co dancers attend four regional dance competitions as well as one national competition. At these fast-paced and glamour-filled competitions, our dancers perform their routines for judges and compete against other studios for prizes and trophies.

Competing in all styles of dance, P.Co is a group of well-rounded dancers who can adapt to many different styles and techniques. As they perfect their routines week after week, they learn teamwork, responsibility, and commitment. In addition to the competitions, they attend dance conventions where they learn from world-renowned teachers alongside students from all over the nation.

P.Com

We know the fast-paced competition atmosphere isn’t for everyone, and performing is about SO much more than just winning trophies. That’s why we created P.Com, our studio’s community expo team. Dancers perform four to six times per year throughout the community with both jazz and hip hop routines.

Discipline, teamwork, and showmanship are all values that we strive to teach our P.Com dancers. We focus on the joy of performance and the amazing feeling you get when you share your love of dance with an audience. This team proudly represents Prestige Dance Studio within the Cedar Rapids area, and they know that means putting their best foot forward always.

Our performance dance teams are pretty great if we do say so ourselves! That’s why we have a tradition at Prestige of creating glowing photo galleries of our dancers that we feature on our very own website. They look just like professional dance companies!

We love displaying our teams on our website. We are proud of the work they do and what they bring to our community. Stay tuned for upcoming dates to catch these dancers live at competitions and community events. 2020 will be our best year yet! Happy New Year Prestige Families!

Navigating the Recital: A Guide for First-time Dance Parents

first time dance parents

We are getting SO excited for our Annual Recital! Our students will be taking the stage Sunday, June 2 at the Paramount Theater. Watching our student do what they love on stage is one of the BEST parts of what we do at Prestige Dance Studio. Putting on a full production is a lot work! We greatly appreciate everything our staff, dancers, and dance families do in preparation for the big show.

The first dance recital can be full of nonstop surprises for the first-time dance parent. Dance has its own culture of expectations and traditions, and they all converge on recital day.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, the following insider tips can help you make the most of your first dance recital, whether your dancer is a toddler or a teen. Read through our tips carefully, and if you need help or clarification, ask! Our dedicated team is happy to help. We want ALL our dance families to feel prepared and confident as they head into the performance.

Insider Tips:

Bring snacks and activities. Recitals can seem long to young children, around an hour and a half of dancing in each show. Be prepared to stay and cheer for every number, and, more importantly, prepare for your dancer to be happy when he or she is back stage. Send some things to entertain your child; card games, a sketch pad or stuffed animal can make the wait much shorter. Also plan for your dancer to be hungry. Recital times often coincide with snack or meal times, so bring non-messy foods, such as dried fruit and nuts, cheese and crackers, or granola bars are good options. Avoid sodas and juices- just a cold bottle of water is perfect!

Costume tips and tricks. You may have several costumes to manage. When you pick up your child’s costumes, avoid the temptation to let her wear them before dress rehearsal. They should look fresh for the performance. Costumes can be itchy, too. Sequins and glitter come at the cost of comfort sometimes. All of our hairpieces are worn on the dancer’s right side. It also helps to keep accessories for each costume in a zip lock bag inside of each costume bag. And whatever you do, don’t forget your dancer’s shoes!

Come equipped. Planning and preparation are key. Bring tissues, make-up supplies, plenty of bobby pins and hair elastics. A comb and hairspray are crucial additions to your recital bag. And don’t forget a fresh new pair of tights!

About the hair. Speaking of bobby pins, a little bun know-how can go a long way. Check out our recital hair video here. Dance buns can seem daunting at first, but with a few practices and some insider knowledge, you’ll master them in no time. First, wet or damp hair is much easier to work with than dry hair with all its flyaway action. Texturizing spray is also a great tool to tame and prepare your dancer’s hair. Brush her hair out and pull it into a tight ponytail.

At this point, if your dancer has shorter to medium-length hair, you can use a bun-maker—also known as those squishy nets shaped like doughnuts and invest in some high-quality hair pins to secure the bun. A hairnet will help keep everything looking slick and smooth. Look for pins that are the same color as your dancer’s hair and tuck them in tight. Keep in mind that your dancer is going to be jumping and twirling, arms moving every which way. Building a hair-pin and hairspray fortress will help to keep that bun in place through all the action and in the short time that they wait backstage.

Don’t forget your tickets! All attendees are required to have a ticket for admittance (with the exception of the dancer). Our seating is general admission, so arriving early to secure seats is encouraged.

Plan for a gift. Recital gifts are a strong tradition in dance. You can pre-order flowers through the studio that you can pick up at the event. And if your dancer is not the flower type, they may love the annual recital animal this year! Younger dancers love receiving stuffed animals to help them remember their first recital for a long time to come.

Save the memories. If you can be at the dress rehearsal at the Paramount, consider taking photos and video there. The crowd is less…crowded, the children are in costume, and this frees you up to just be present and celebrate your child during the actual performance. Cameras are not allowed to be used during the recital performance. Even easier: just order the DVD that we produce. It’s an extra investment that pays for itself and your dancer can even enjoy watching the show at home.

Most of all, remember that our children are little emotional sponges. It’s normal for parents sometimes to feel anxious or nervous about their children’s first events. But work to avoid channeling your nerves to your child, who is just excited for a fun experience. Remind yourself of what’s most important (your child’s enjoyment of the show experience), take a deep breath and cheer for your dancer. If you observe that your dancer is nervous, remind him or her that everyone is there simply to celebrate a great year of dancing and to enjoy the show!

It is going to be another GREAT performance!

ps. Additional recital details, order forms, and schedules can all be found on our recital page

Get Your Shine On & Audition for our Performance Teams

Competitive Dance Team

One of the MOST rewarding parts of dance studio life is watching our kids learn to shine. We love watching our kids grow into captivating powerhouses that can command an audience. We see them make baby steps each week in class within our studio walls, but the here is so much value in giving our kids performance opportunities, which is why we have Performance Teams at Prestige!

Our studio is home to two different teams: our P.Co team and our P.Com team. Is your dancer loving dance and wanting more than just a weekly class? Are they itching to perform more than just once a year at recital? Both of these teams are a great way to give your dancer MORE opportunities to get their shine on this upcoming school year. Not sure which team is the right fit for your dancer? Let’s break down what each team is all about.

This competitive dance team is perfect for dancers who are excited and energized by the idea of competing against talented dancers from other studios. It requires hard-work and a year long commitment to their team as they prepare for the exciting and fun-filled competition season.

P.Com

This team is Prestige Dance Studio’s community expo team. Performing 4-6 times per year in the Cedar Rapids area, these dancers learn hip hop and jazz routines and spread their love of dance throughout the community. This team is for our dancers who are itching to perform. Dancers learn discipline, teamwork, and showmanship.

Do these teams sound like something that would get your dancer eager to hit the stage? We have three important dates for you to get the ball rolling! If your dancer is interested in joining one of performance teams for the 2019/2020 season, mark your calendar!
