The Intensive is back by popular demand! Each August, incredible choreographers from all over the United States are flown into Cedar Rapids for a dance workshop at Prestige Dance Studio. The Intensive is a jam-packed weekend full of quality technical training, choreography that challenges dancers mentally and physically, and most of all FUN! This is our favorite way to finish the summer and gear up for the start of another great school year session. We are accepting registrations as space allows. Register online to reserve your child’s spot!

Dancers ages 4+ are invited to join us August 11th and 12th for a weekend that will have an impact LONG after they leave the studio. Be prepared to be inspired and energized! Training in an intense, condensed atmosphere allows dancers to really dive deep into the material and push themselves beyond what they thought they could achieve. Every summer we are blown away by the growth we witness in our dancers.

One of the aspects that makes The Intensive so special is our line-up of guest artists. Our guest choreographers bring diverse backgrounds and a wide range of impressive credentials. We are thrilled to offer our students an opportunity to expand their horizons and exposure to different teaching styles without having to leave the studio. We are providing a safe environment for them to explore and express the emotional component of dance!

dance workshop at Prestige Dance Studio

Aimee Jarzembowski found her joy and drive for performing at the young age of three. Since then, she’s been singing, dancing and acting her way to her dreams. Aimee is a graduate of Western Illinois University with a degree in Musical Theatre and Dance. When not teaching dance and theatre, she enjoys participating in local community theatre productions, prepping her for the big move to NYC, one day. Some favorites have been Tracy in Hairspray, Jan in Grease, BJ in Smokey Joe’s Cafe, and Miss Fleming in Heathers. This summer she will be Mabel in the beloved 80s hit, Fame. She thoroughly enjoys bringing dance and musical theatre together; one of her favorite pieces choreographed has been a tap dance to a song from Dear Evan Hansen. If any free time occurs, she loves learning new songs and recording singing videos that have been recognized on social media.

Dance-Inspired Halloween Costumes

Cedar Rapids Dancers will love our ideas for halloween! Halloween is JUST around the corner, do you have all your costumes ready and picked out? If not, you are not alone! We are sure that many of our dance parents out there are starting to panic a little. We have just the thing for those parents, the ultimate dance-inspired Halloween costume list. Feel free to go through it, check your closet for things you already have and put together something amazing! These costume ideas would be perfect for any dancer OR any parent hehe!

Do you have a favorite dance icon? We LOVE the idea of dressing up as your favorite version of Brittany Spears, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, or Audrey Hepburn. Pick your favorite look and go for it! There is also a slew of professional dancers to choose from. Try Misty Copeland as “Firebird”, Martha Graham from “Lamentation”, Maddie Ziegler from a Sia video,  or even a judge from “So You Think You Can Dance!”

What is your favorite dance movie, Broadway show, or ballet? Can you make a costume inspired by a character? We ALL love “Dirty Dancing,” “Footloose,” “Grease,” “West Side Story,” “Swan Lake,” etc. There are SO many memorable characters to choose from! The best part is that most wouldn’t even require a trip to the store!

For people who want to keep things a little simpler, we think the classics are FABULOUS as well! Be a ballet, hip-hop, jazz, or modern dancer. Wear your favorite dancewear and call it a day. Also taking on dance from your favorite century can be super fun! We love a good poodle skirt or side pony. If you are going for a more edgy look this year, a zombie dancer or cheerleader will ALWAYS give a good scare.

You see? There are SO many great options to choose from that incorporate dance in some way. We hope this gave you a little inspiration for this year’s festivities. We can’t wait to hear your Halloween costume plans and see what you come up with!

Best Of The Web PERFORMANCE HACKS

Best of the web performance

As some of our dancers are busy attending competitions and community performances, others are gearing up for recital. Where ever your dancer is in their performance season, it is never too early to start planning for a smooth, stress-free event. From quick changes to event safety, we have collected the best dance performance hacks from the web so you can breathe easy. At Prestige, our best advice is to plan ahead and go through the big day with your dancer so they know what to expect and you are both on the same page. Who is helping them change? When and where can they eat? When can they relax for a bit? Dancers generally will feel more prepared and less frazzled when there is a plan in place and as a dance parent, you will feel better too!

  • Labeling Garment Bags For Dance Competitions and Recitals – This article tells you exactly how to label and organize your costumes. Quick changes will be a breeze and lost costumes will be a thing of the past if you follow this method.

  • Dance Bag Organization – We think using a reusable wine/beverage bag from a grocery store does an AMAZING job at creating little compartments within your dance bag. The dancer in the article uses the bag alone but it would fit inside of your normal bag too. You could even use more than one! It would make finding shoes and accessories SO much easier!

  • How to Clean Practically Anything Dance Related – Dirty shoes, dancewear, or costumes, this article has got you covered!

  • A Snack Plan– This is an easy idea to keep all your dancer’s snacks organized. We all know it takes a lot of fuel perform at your best so make sure your dancer is well stocked with healthy options!

  • Event Safety – We love this article and video on how to keep your dancers safe during performances. Although we do our best to make sure every event runs as smoothly and safely as possible, sometimes things happen. Having a first aid kit on hand as a simple way to ease your mind during a very busy day.

We love seeing our Prestige dancers perform on stage! With these simple hacks, you will be able to relax and enjoy the show!

Dress Down To Support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Dress Down For Dance

Have you decided to join in for Dress Down for Dance?? We could not be more excited about this fun week of classes happening at our studio from February 20th-26th. As you all know, our teachers can be pretty strict about our dress code hehe. During this week of normal dance classes, we give students the opportunity to FINALLY wear what they want to wear! It can feel amazing to express your inner self through dance clothes. And to make it even MORE fulfilling, all the proceeds are going to an incredible organization, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Paying $5 the night of your regularly scheduled dance classes will allow your dancer to participate in the dress down for one whole night of dance. The best part? It will help support the LLS.

In case you need any more convincing to get in on the fun, let me tell you a little about the LLS and the important work they do. Their main focus is to find cures for blood cancers. They also provide patients the information, support, and tools necessary to access treatment and care. The LLS is one of the leading organizations for blood cancer research putting in over $1 billion since it’s creation to this effort. They also provide free information, support groups, financial support, and much, much more for patients and families.

We are so honored to be sending the proceeds from our dress down to the LLS. We want to do our part in helping them continue to do the amazing things they do. Our family at Prestige always goes above and beyond with helping others. There are no words to express how inspiring it is to watch young students get behind the “giving back” message. I cannot wait to see all of the participants for Dress Down for Dance and of course the outfit choices!

Best of the Web HOLIDAY EDITION!!

holiday guide prestige dance studio

We LOVE to celebrate family at Prestige Dance Studio. We strive every day to create an environment that helps our students to feel supported and celebrated. We consider our students, families, teachers, and staff all important members of the Prestige family! For many of our students, the studio is their second home.

We will, OF COURSE, miss seeing our students over the holiday break- but we know how important it is to spend quality time with the people you love. Just like we nurture our relationships inside the studio, we want our students to understand the importance of nurturing their relationships outside of the studio. We rounded up some links today to get those wheels turning if you are looking for fun ideas and activities to do with your family in the coming weeks. We’ve got events, crafts, activities, recipes, and MORE!

Just as a reminder, the studio will be closed for holiday break December 23-January 1. We look forward to hearing about your family adventures when students return to class!

Check out all the local events happening in Cedar Rapids! Lots of fun stuff happening this weekend. I have my eye on the Winter Solstice Party:) PS. Here is another list on the Cedar Rapids Mom Blog of all the places to see Santa if you need to check that off your list!

If you are in the mood for a road trip, consider heading to Chicago to check out the Joffrey Ballet’s brand new Nutcracker! They are mixing things up with brand new choreography, a new take on the classic story based on the Chicago World Fair, and new costumes and sets. There are still tickets left for many of the performances. If you do attend, please let us know on Facebook what you think of the new production! I am excited to hear the reviews.

I really like this next idea… and may have to start this tradition with my own family. This blogger spends one night each holiday season driving around and looking at Christmas lights like many families do. Her version has a few special rules. Everyone has to wear their “jammies”, you have to get hot cocoa (and wear your jammies while you go inside to get it), and you have to listen to Christmas music while you drive around. Can’t you imagine your kids LOVING this???

I know you took care of your dancers after reading through our gift guide (hehe) but do you still need to come up with gifts for teachers, babysitters, or grandparents? Work with your kids to make something! Fun for you, fun for your kiddos, and super fun for the recipient to open. Here is another link with great ideas if you have younger children. Homemade gifts are the best:)

My favorite part of the holidays may be the cookies. I love making them, and I love eating them. Have your kids help you pick out a recipe and make something delicious together. I love these adorable Santa strawberries. A super simple way to make a (kinda) healthy snack memorable hehe.

Get your whole family involved in giving back to the community. Have you heard of Volunteer Match? You can plug in your city and what type of volunteer opportunity you are looking for and it comes up with all sorts of options. It is super handy to have all the contact information right there. It is a very cool site. I also love that it includes volunteer work that can be done virtually. Create memories while you give back to the community (you know that we are HUGE fans of giving back at Prestige Dance Studio!).. win, win!

Finally, if your child is REALLY missing their dance classes, join in on the fun. Let them teach YOU something. Check out this dad. He wanted to find a way to bond with his daughter, so he took up gymnastics and let her teach him what she was working on. It’s pretty impressive!

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s

Walk to End Alzheimer's

As many of you know, the Alzheimer’s Association and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is very near and dear to our hearts here at Prestige Dance Studio. Miss Jess’s mother, Duanne, has been battling Alzheimer’s for 10 years. She is now 64 years old and in her final stages of this horrible disease.

We have connected with the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s to share our support to Miss Jess’s family and to give back to our community. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. The event is held in over 600 locations across the country, including Cedar Rapids. In 2015, the organization raised over $75 million.

Each year, Prestige Dance Studio organizes a team called “Dancers for Dude.” Together as a studio, we raise money for the cause and participate in the walk. Along with enjoying the event, we are looking forward to special performances by our Company and Community teams. Last year Dancers for Dude was the largest team in Eastern Iowa.
